Pocket PE began with a simple but urgent question: how can schools give students more meaningful physical activity when time, space, staffing, and resources are often stretched?
As an early career researcher, Dr. Jeanette Ricci spent years studying how children move, how physical activity supports healthy development, and why so many educators face barriers when trying to deliver quality PE. Again and again, the same challenge surfaced: schools cared about movement and standards-aligned instruction, but many classroom teachers were being asked to teach PE without enough time, training, space, or support.
Pocket PE was created to help close that gap.
Led by Dr. Ricci and developed with support from federal research funding, Pocket PE was built through years of evidence-based development and collaboration with educators. Classroom teachers, PE specialists, researchers, and advisors helped shape the experience so the app would work in the places educators actually teach, from gyms to classrooms to outdoor spaces. The result is a tool designed to respect educators’ expertise while making lesson planning, implementation, and reporting more manageable. Pocket PE supports real instructional goals, adapts to real school conditions, and helps make meaningful movement more possible for every student.
Just as importantly, Pocket PE is intentionally human-built. The app does not depend on AI-generated lessons or AI-created teaching content. Every lesson framework, activity, and support feature is designed through research, standards alignment, and educator-informed development.
